WELCOME TO ISSUE 9

This issue is dedicated to The Eye and all it sees – and we are honoured to have legendary illustrator Peter Bailey create our very sophisticated and elegant cover.

Pre-Raphaelite sculptor Alexander Munro’s nymph carrying a vase is a perfect cover girl. Peter’s extraordinary body of work, creating countless covers for some of the best children’s writers in the world such as Philip Pullman, is enough to make anyone’s eyes water. Over in The Covent Gardener, we have a beautiful article by Lucy Moore on Peter’s illustrative career.

We flutter our eyelashes at Mark Fox as he explores this time-honoured way of capturing attention. And we learn that exaggerated eyelashes have been used throughout history, as far back as Roman times, to make a person’s eyes more prominent and noticeable. More on page 8.

We show off with Lucy Moore and learn some top tips from Beau Brummell (1778-1840) ‘who took five fastidious hours to dress each day and, with arrogant disdain for mere economics, insisted that his boots be polished with champagne.’ And we take a camel ride down Savile row with Adam Dant and learn about The Guild of Merchant Taylors.

Along with our usual suspects – shopping, Local Knowledge and John Foley’s puzzle (do let us know if you need help with a clue) – we have 10 cheesecakes from JW Marriott Grosvenor House for you to win (they sell over 50,000 cheesecakes every year). All you need to do is tell us whose eyes you’ll be looking into while you eat yours. Details of how to enter on page 5.

Our focus is always on Mayfair, creativity and community and we are incredibly passionate about print and our beautifully curated and fully commissioned independent publications.
