WELCOME TO ISSUE 4
Our Summer Regal Issue sees us celebrating one year in Mayfair. I decided to take the leap into publishing a second magazine (after The Covent Gardener, our first) during lockdown. It’s been challenging running two publications, but I hope you will agree it’s worth it. I strongly believe in print and the power a beautifully curated publication has in bringing together a community. It’s this belief which has led me to collaborating every Friday morning with the children of St George’s Primary School in Mount St, where the school magazine’s second issue is due out in mid-June.
Every article written and illustration created for The Mayfarer (and The Covent Gardener) is always commissioned especially for us, working with the established as well as the up-and-coming. For our Summer Issues Ruth Marten, one of my favourite New Yorkers, is our esteemed cover artist. Ruth has a 30-year career illustrating for leading magazines, fashion houses, music and book publishers and as a professor in the Illustration department at the very prestigious School of Visual Arts, she does not accept commissions anymore. After years of persistence on my part she finally relented, and then in her inevitable fashion summoned me to NY to pick up the original artwork. (Read more about Ruth and her endless accomplishments in The Covent Gardener).
Following on with our regal theme, we have features ranging from the history of Bruton Place (where a very famous Royal was born) to royal couturiers and exiled monarchs. If you’re after something a little racier, The Covent Gardener covers 17th century Royal Affairs, some anti-establishment views, and an attempted regicide at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane…
Please have a look at the new Jubilee map — artist Adam Dant has created a new set of characters highlighting Mayfair’s royal connections, and he’s also created a flag for you to put on display in your window.
I am incredibly excited to be announcing our summer Cover Competition. The winning artwork will appear on the covers for the Autumn 2022 Issues of both The Mayfarer and The Covent Gardener, as well as being emblazoned on flags placed throughout Mayfair and Covent Garden. You can find the full brief on p18, along with a list of our illustrious judges spanning the world of art. Please do share this with anyone you think will be up for the challenge!
